Maps and location around camp

Before leaving coverage, download an offline map for the whole area - not just the campsite but the trails and roads around it. Mark the tent and vehicle positions as reference points on the map, so that when someone messages "roughly where am I" there's a shared frame. Children and members spreading out from camp

For young children or people who can't conveniently carry a phone, a small tracker that reports its own location over radio is a good option - in a backpack or on a pet's collar. It only shows its location on the map of people in the group carrying a full device; it doesn't message. An important safety note: a tracker tells you roughly where a device is, not whether the child is okay. For young children around streams, cliffs or roads, no device replaces an adult within line of sight.
