What goTenna Mesh did
To pick a replacement, you need to be clear about what you're replacing. goTenna Mesh is a small radio, no screen, that connects to your phone over Bluetooth. The app on your phone handles the interface: messaging, GPS location sharing, and a map. The radio itself works on the shared 900 MHz band (902-928 MHz in the US), around 1 watt of power, and it can relay messages through other goTenna devices - up to six hops - to reach people beyond direct range. Fits when: you like picking your own hardware, configuring it yourself, and being part of a large, actively developed community. LoRa mesh with MeshCore and an app like Nelos
MeshCore is a newer open-source LoRa mesh project. Public sources say it started becoming popular in early 2025. MeshCore separates devices into roles: companion radios that each person carries, connected to a phone over Bluetooth; repeaters as relay infrastructure; and room servers that store message history. By default, companion radios do not relay traffic for other nodes - long-distance routing goes through repeaters. This reduces radio congestion compared to every node rebroadcasting.

A LoRa mesh system with a simple phone app is the sensible direction.
