These two systems are often mentioned together, but they come from two eras and two philosophies. This is a neutral comparison, not an attempt to crown a winner.

If you used goTenna Mesh and are looking for a replacement, Meshtastic almost certainly shows up on the list. Both are "a phone connected to a small radio for off-grid messaging," but how they do that differs considerably.

Two different eras

goTenna Mesh is a commercial product that launched in 2016. One company designed both the hardware and the software, sold devices in pairs, and controlled the whole experience. The upside is that everything is packaged; the downside is that when the company changed direction, users had few options.

Meshtastic is an open-source, community-driven project that appeared later. There's no single official "Meshtastic device" - you flash the Meshtastic firmware onto commodity LoRa radio boards from various makers. The upside is not depending on a single company; the downside is you have to pick the hardware yourself and get comfortable with configuration.

Hardware: closed vs open

With goTenna Mesh, you buy goTenna's device and there's no other option. This is simple, but it also means the device's fate is tied to one company's decisions.

With Meshtastic, the firmware runs on many LoRa boards from makers like Heltec, RAK or LilyGO - usually based on the ESP32 or nRF52 chips. You can choose by battery, size, antenna, or price. If one model stops being sold, there are others. In exchange, you have to do the research to choose, and not every board gives the same experience.

Radio: proprietary protocol vs LoRa

goTenna Mesh uses a proprietary radio protocol on the shared 900 MHz band in the US. Meshtastic uses LoRa, a modulation technique designed to trade data rate for sensitivity and range, operating on different bands by region (for example EU868 across much of Europe, US915 in North America).

For an end user, the thing to remember is that both are low-power radios and real-world range depends on terrain, obstacles, antennas and conditions. Neither has a fixed range number that holds everywhere. The guide Are Mesh Networks Reliable? says more about this.

The smartphone experience

goTenna Mesh had a single official app, made by goTenna, with a messaging and map interface designed for consumers. When the company left the consumer market, that app stopped being maintained. The guide What Happened to the goTenna Mesh App? has more.

Meshtastic has official apps on iOS and Android, along with third-party client apps and a web interface. That variety is an advantage in choice, but it also means the experience isn't uniform - two Meshtastic users might be looking at two different apps.

Mesh and repeaters

goTenna Mesh lets every device relay messages for each other, up to six hops. Meshtastic also takes the every-node-rebroadcasts approach: a message floods out to nearby nodes, and on to the destination. This is simple to understand and needs no infrastructure set up in advance, but as the number of nodes grows, so does the amount of rebroadcasting.

This is also where newer projects like MeshCore choose a different approach - separating personal devices from fixed repeaters, so long-distance routing goes through infrastructure rather than flooding everywhere. Cost and setup complexity

goTenna Mesh sold for around $179 a pair, and setup was simple: install the app, pair, done. Now only used units.

With Meshtastic, each device is usually a few tens of dollars. Setup takes a few more steps: pick a board that fits your region and needs, flash the firmware (many boards come with it pre-flashed, but not all), choose the region and channel config. Not hard, but more than "install an app and go."

Current support

goTenna Mesh is no longer supported on the consumer side since 2024. Meshtastic is actively developed with a large community, plenty of documentation, and frequent updates. This is a big difference if you want a system that will still be maintained years from now.

Which type of user each fits

Meshtastic fits people who like picking their own hardware, don't mind configuration, want an open-source system with a large community, and see tinkering as part of the fun.

goTenna Mesh used to fit people who wanted a packaged product with little to think about - but it's no longer a realistic option for new buyers.

If what you liked about goTenna was the simple smartphone experience

There's a group of goTenna Mesh users who don't care whether the software is open or closed. They liked that everything was simple: a tidy phone app, a pocket radio, and not much configuration.

If that's what you want to keep, a client app built on top of LoRa mesh may fit better than plain Meshtastic.
