Are Mesh Networks Reliable?
A practical look at how reliable a mesh network really is out in the field, its limitations, and where it fits as an additional layer of communication.
If your mesh network is just a handful of small radios your group is carrying, is it actually something you can count on out in the field?
We're used to messages, calls, and everything online happening almost instantly and being available almost everywhere. That expectation comes from telecom infrastructure that's genuinely excellent across most of the places we spend our daily lives - not because every communication technology works that way. Once you're out of coverage, that infrastructure is simply gone. Not because anything broke - because there was never a tower out there to begin with.
A mesh network you carry with you isn't trying to replace that infrastructure. It's an additional layer of communication, run by your own group, working alongside cell service and satellite rather than instead of them. For the cost of a few relatively inexpensive radios - depending on the hardware, sometimes just tens of dollars per device - adding another way for the group to communicate can be worth considering, even if it isn't perfect.
A Backup Network You Carry Yourself
When a few people in a group carry mesh radios, they're effectively carrying a small communication network of their own - run by them and whoever they're traveling with, and not dependent on cell service or an internet connection for the radios themselves to talk to each other.

Temporary Disconnects Happen
Devices don't stay in constant contact with each other all the time, and out in the field, that's normal. Someone walking behind a ridge can temporarily lose contact with the rest of the group - and a few minutes later, once their position changes, reconnect.
Terrain, distance, antenna position, radio configuration, and interference can all affect whether two devices hear each other at a given moment. This isn't the place to get into RF engineering - just know those factors exist, and that a radio network you carry yourself shouldn't be held to the same expectations as internet infrastructure.
Built for an Imperfect Network
Nelos is designed to still provide useful information when a team member temporarily loses contact.
When someone's phone temporarily loses connection with the group, Nelos reflects that status rather than assuming they're still online. If a member's phone hasn't checked in for more than a few minutes, other members can still see the most recent location that person shared, along with a timestamp.
That last known location isn't their current location. They may have moved well beyond it by then. But a recent position, with a timestamp attached, is still useful: depending on whether they were on foot or in a vehicle, how much time has passed, and what the surrounding terrain and routes look like, the group can get a rough sense of where to start looking - not a precise search radius, and not a safety guarantee, but useful context when there may otherwise be very little information to work with.
When a Phone Isn't Available
There's another case worth mentioning: a dropped, broken, or dead phone. If that person's handheld radio has its own GPS, and they turned on the relevant option in Nelos's device settings beforehand, another team member can still request that location directly from the radio, without going through a phone.
Not every handheld radio has its own GPS. When it does, Nelos keeps that GPS on by default for safety, so a location is there if it's ever needed. It can be turned off to save battery, though the effect on battery life is small. It's an extra layer of backup, not something that's always available regardless of device or setup.
When Terrain Keeps Getting in the Way
If a stretch of terrain consistently blocks the path to somewhere that matters - a campsite, a frequently used trail section - placing a repeater in the right spot can add another relay path and help the network reach further through it. This isn't a repeater installation guide; it's just worth knowing the option exists.

So, Are Mesh Networks Reliable?
Not with a simple yes. Reliable doesn't have to mean perfect. A small mesh network carried by a group isn't going to behave like the internet, and it shouldn't be expected to.
Sometimes everyone stays connected. Sometimes someone disappears behind a hill for a few minutes. Sometimes a message takes a while, or doesn't get through. That's simply part of using a radio network under real conditions.
For trips that are genuinely remote or higher-risk, you should still have a backup communication plan suited to the situation, not rely on a mesh network alone. A mesh network isn't perfect. But it doesn't need to be perfect to be worth carrying. What matters is understanding its limits and using it for what it actually is: an additional layer of communication, carried and run by your own group.
