Staying Connected Abroad: SIM, Roaming, or LoRa?

Arrive somewhere new, and getting online - and staying in touch with whoever you're traveling with - is usually the first thing on everyone's mind. Traveling solo, the answer is simple enough: buy a SIM, install an eSIM, or just turn on roaming. Traveling as a group - a family on holiday, a road trip crew, a motorcycle touring group, or a few friends backpacking across several countries - the question actually splits in two: how do you get online, and how does everyone in the group know where the others are, what they're doing, and how to reach each other if something comes up.
Those two problems don't always need the same answer, even though most people default to assuming they do. This guide walks through three common options - local SIM/eSIM, international roaming, and LoRa devices - so you can see what each one actually solves.
Local SIM or eSIM: familiar, but it takes some setup
Buying a physical SIM or an eSIM from a local carrier is the most common way to get online in a new country. It usually comes with a few steps: registering, showing a passport or ID depending on local rules, activating the plan, and picking a carrier and data package that fits how long you're staying. In some countries this is quick, handled right at an airport kiosk; in others it means queueing, filling out forms, or being told the plan is only available to residents or visa holders.
For a group moving through several countries - a cross-border road trip, say, or a multi-country motorcycle tour - this step repeats at every stop: everyone buying a new SIM, a different carrier, a different plan, a fresh registration each time.
International roaming: more convenient, but carrier-dependent
Roaming is far more convenient in practice - same SIM, same phone number, just turn roaming on (or it's already included in your plan) and it works almost as soon as the plane lands, no queueing or paperwork required.
That convenience comes with dependencies of its own: whether your home carrier has a roaming agreement with a carrier in the country you're visiting, whether your plan actually covers that country, and pricing - roaming outside a bundled allowance can get expensive fast, especially for data.
Both need the same thing: cell coverage
Whether it's a local SIM or roaming, both need the same underlying condition to work: cell coverage in that area. In cities and most tourist areas that's rarely an issue. But on mountain roads, remote border crossings, or the kind of long, sparsely populated stretches a road trip or motorcycle tour tends to cross, signal can get patchy or disappear entirely - and at that point, neither a local SIM nor roaming helps, simply because the tower infrastructure isn't there.
LoRa: a different layer, just for your group
If what you actually need isn't internet access but simply staying in touch with the people you're traveling with - knowing where everyone is, sending a short message, being able to reach each other if something happens - there's another option worth considering: LoRa radio devices.
Instead of every phone trying to reach a carrier's tower, each person in the group carries a small radio, and those radios talk directly to each other, forming a local network that belongs to the group alone - no SIM, no carrier, and no dependence on whether that area has cell coverage at all.

LoRa doesn't replace SIM or eSIM if you need internet
Worth saying plainly upfront: LoRa doesn't replace a SIM or eSIM if you need internet access. You'll still need mobile data or Wi-Fi for browsing, social media, bookings, ride-hailing, online maps, and most other internet services. A LoRa device doesn't connect to the internet, and isn't meant to.
What LoRa adds instead is an independent communication layer, just for your group - running alongside whatever you use to get online, not replacing it.
For example, you may still want an eSIM for internet access, while using LoRa for communication and location sharing within your group.

Check local frequency regulations and laws before you travel
This is the most important part if you're planning to carry a LoRa device across borders: there's no single LoRa frequency band that's legal to use everywhere. Different regions use different bands and channel plans - EU868 across much of Europe, US915 in North America, AU915 in Australia, various AS923 variants across a number of Asia-Pacific countries, IN865 in India, or KR920 in South Korea. A device configured for one country's band isn't necessarily permitted - or guaranteed to work correctly - in another.
Beyond frequency, a country's regulations can also limit other things: transmit power, duty cycle (how much of the time a device is allowed to transmit within a given period), dwell time (the maximum length of a single transmission on a channel), how channels can be used, equipment certification requirements, or other conditions set by local telecom law.

Before using any LoRa device abroad, check the current regulations from the telecom or spectrum regulator in the country you're visiting.

But it's worth being clear about what it is: a technical specification for device compatibility, not a substitute for each country's laws and regulations - a band being listed there doesn't mean every device using it is free to operate in every country in that region.
A short routine before you cross a border
Whatever you're carrying, a few things are worth doing before each leg of the trip, not once you're already on the road:
- Before each country on your route, check the current radio and frequency regulations from the local telecom regulator - don't assume a device that's fine in one country is fine in the next.
- Still plan for a way to get online - eSIM, local SIM, or Wi-Fi - for whatever LoRa doesn't cover: online maps, bookings, reaching people outside the group.
- Charge phones and LoRa devices before each leg departs, not in a last-minute rush.
- Pair devices and confirm everyone's on the same team before departure, so there's nothing left to set up or troubleshoot once you're out of coverage.

What your trip actually needs
There's no single right answer for every trip. Someone on a short business trip to one country, mostly staying in a city hotel, will probably be fine with an eSIM or roaming alone. But a family on a multi-country road trip, a motorcycle touring group working through a mountainous border region, or a backpacking group moving continuously across several countries over several weeks tends to run into the exact gap that SIM and roaming don't fully solve: staying in touch with the group in stretches with no signal, or not wanting to spend time registering a new SIM at every border just to message each other.
SIM/eSIM and roaming are still what you need if you want to get online - nothing replaces that.
