How to Communicate While Hiking Without Cell Service

A practical look at staying in touch with your group once the bars disappear - what two-way radios, satellite messengers, and LoRa mesh are each actually good for, and where they fall short.

Most hiking groups don't think about communication until they've already lost it. You're at the trailhead with decent bars, everyone assumes their phone will work if something comes up, and then somewhere past the first ridge the signal quietly disappears. Nobody notices until they need to send a message and can't.

That gap - between "we'll just text if we get separated" and the reality of hiking somewhere without cell coverage - is worth closing before you leave the car, not after.

The problem starts before you lose signal

Cell networks depend on towers, and how well a signal reaches your phone from one comes down to distance, terrain, and what's in the way - which is exactly what mountains, valleys, and dense forest are good at disrupting. A single ridge between you and the nearest tower can be enough to turn full bars into nothing, and the change can happen within a few hundred meters of trail. Coverage in mountain terrain isn't a smooth gradient - it's patchy, and it can disappear and reappear as the trail winds around terrain features, which is part of why it's easy to assume you're covered right up until you specifically aren't.

None of this is really about your carrier. Terrain, vegetation, distance from the nearest tower, the frequency a network uses, and where towers happen to be placed all affect how far and how reliably a signal travels, and mountainous or forested terrain tends to work against several of these at once. So the honest starting point for any hiking trip somewhere remote is to assume you'll lose service at some point, and decide in advance how the group will handle that - rather than discovering mid-hike that "just call if something happens" was never actually a plan.

Start with the simplest thing: a plan

Before any hardware, the thing that actually keeps a group together is agreeing on it out loud. A rough idea of where you're meeting up if people spread out, what happens if someone doesn't show at a checkpoint, and roughly what time everyone's supposed to be back at the trailhead. It sounds almost too basic to mention, but it's the one thing that still works even if every device in your pack fails.

Radios, satellite messengers, and mesh devices are useful because they make coordination easier and give you options when something goes wrong - they don't replace having a plan, they support one. A group with a solid plan and no electronics will generally do better than a group with great gear and no idea where anyone's supposed to be if they get split up.

Two-way radios: simple, immediate, and dependent on terrain

The most familiar option is a pair of walkie-talkies - FRS or GMRS radios, depending on where you are and what power and licensing rules apply locally. They're straightforward: push a button, talk, and everyone listening on that channel hears you immediately. No pairing process, no app, no data plan. For a group that wants to stay in voice contact while spread out along a trail, that immediacy is genuinely useful.

Two-way radios generally perform best when the path between them is relatively unobstructed, so terrain can have a major effect on practical range. Radios marketed with "range up to X miles" are usually describing open, flat terrain with nothing in the way, and hiking terrain is rarely that generous. Once a ridge or a stand of trees gets between two radios, the signal has to go around or over the obstacle, and it often doesn't manage that well. In practice, a group hiking on the same side of a mountain often gets workable range; a group split across opposite sides of it can find communication becomes much more difficult or unreliable, whatever the box promised.

The other thing worth knowing is that basic radios are a live conversation, not a message. If someone isn't holding the radio, or has it turned down, they simply don't get whatever you just said - there's no log to check later, no map, no way to see where anyone currently is. That's fine for "we're ten minutes behind, don't wait for us" chatter. It's less fine if the group needs to coordinate something over several hours, or if someone needs to catch up on what they missed.

Satellite messengers: built for when things actually go wrong

For real emergencies - an injury, someone missing, weather turning bad somewhere with no other way to call for help - satellite messengers exist for a different reason than staying in touch with your own group. Devices like the Garmin inReach or Zoleo connect to satellite networks (commonly Iridium) instead of cell towers, so they work in places with no cellular infrastructure at all, including a lot of backcountry terrain that swallows both cell signal and short-range radio.

The trade-offs are worth knowing before you're relying on one. Most satellite messengers need an ongoing subscription to send and receive messages, on top of the hardware cost. They also depend on a reasonably open view of the sky - dense canopy or a narrow canyon can slow things down, though they're generally far more reliable in that regard than cellular or short-range radio. Many current devices go well beyond a basic SOS button, too - two-way messaging, message history, and location tracking through a companion app are fairly standard now. What actually sets a satellite messenger apart from a local radio setup isn't the feature list, it's the infrastructure: a satellite connects you to people and services well outside your group - family back home, emergency responders - while a local mesh focuses on keeping members of the group connected, as long as the group's radio network can still reach them.

If a trip is remote or risky enough to warrant satellite emergency capability, that's worth treating as its own decision, separate from whatever the group uses to talk to each other along the trail. A LoRa radio setup - including Nelos - is not a substitute for a satellite SOS device or a PLB on a trip that actually calls for one; the two solve different problems, and it's common for a group to carry both.

LoRa mesh: a way for the group to stay in touch, locally

There's a middle option that doesn't depend on cell towers or satellites at all. Instead of each phone trying to reach a distant tower, everyone in the group carries a small radio, and those radios talk directly to each other - and can relay through each other - to form a local network that only needs the group itself to be in range, not any outside infrastructure.

This is what LoRa mesh systems like MeshCore do. Practically, for a hiking group, it means short text messages, basic location sharing, and group communication that works without any cell signal or wifi, because it never needed the cell network in the first place - it's radios talking to other radios. The hardware tends to be small and relatively inexpensive compared to satellite gear, and in the right terrain, a repeater placed on high ground can extend how far the mesh reaches by relaying messages between nodes that couldn't otherwise hear each other directly.

The same physics that limits walkie-talkies applies here too, though. Terrain, obstacles, antenna placement, and distance all still matter, and there's no way to promise a specific range that holds up on every trail. LoRa mesh can work well when terrain and node placement are favorable, but it shouldn't be expected to communicate through a mountain or across long stretches of obstructed terrain without careful planning or appropriate repeater placement. Anyone promising a guaranteed number of miles is skipping the part where terrain is often the biggest practical factor, alongside antenna placement, obstacles, radio configuration, and distance.

Where Nelos fits in

For a hiking group, that mostly means sending a short message without cell service, seeing roughly where everyone is on a shared map, and getting a sense of which teammates are currently online. Maps are a separate problem from messaging

Communication is only half of what disappears when you lose cell service - the other half is not being able to load a map, and the two don't always fail together the way people expect. A phone can still show a signal bar or two, which feels like being "connected," even when there's no usable mobile data behind those bars - seeing bars doesn't guarantee the internet actually works well enough to load anything. Losing that data connection doesn't mean GPS stops working, either: GPS can work out your location from satellite signals without needing a mobile data connection, so losing the internet doesn't automatically mean losing your location too - your phone can usually still tell you exactly where you are. What it won't have, without something already downloaded, is much to show around that location - it can know the coordinates and still have very little useful map to display. That's why it's worth downloading whatever maps you'll actually need before you leave coverage, rather than assuming you'll be able to pull them up on the trail.

It's worth being clear about what that does and doesn't do, though: the map is something your phone shows you locally - it doesn't send or receive anything, and it's a different feature from the LoRa radio that actually lets you communicate with your group. Having offline maps ready is genuinely useful preparation; it just isn't the same thing as being able to reach anyone.

There's a similar gap on the location side. Most people are used to seeing where their group is through some internet-connected app - a dot on a live map, without really thinking about it - and that habit stops working the moment usable data disappears. If the group gets separated, describing where you are over voice or text ("I'm near a tree," "somewhere beside the trail," "I passed a junction a few minutes ago") turns out to be surprisingly hard to make useful in unfamiliar terrain. This is where LoRa and offline maps end up working together: GPS still knows each phone's own position, and when the group's radios can reach each other, Nelos can pass that position along over the LoRa network instead of mobile data, showing each person's latest shared position on the offline map instead of a verbal description. It's not continuous tracking, and it only works as well as the radio connection between you does - but it beats trying to describe "near a tree" over a crackly connection.

A short routine before you leave coverage

Whatever you end up bringing, the useful moment to test it is at the trailhead, not the first time you actually need it. A few things worth doing before you start hiking:

  • Charge phones and any radio devices the night before, not the morning of.
  • If you're using Nelos, connect each person's device and confirm everyone's on the same team.
  • Send a test message and check that it arrives while you still have cell signal to fall back on, so you're not troubleshooting for the first time when it actually matters.
  • Check that location sharing is working and showing where you expect it to.
  • Download offline maps for the whole area you'll cover, not just the trailhead.
  • Agree - out loud, not just assumed - on what the group does if someone gets separated or misses a checkpoint.
  • If the trip is remote enough to need satellite SOS capability, test that separately, ahead of time, rather than assuming it'll work the first time you turn it on.

None of this takes long, and it's the difference between gear that actually helps and gear that's just along for the ride.

What your trip actually needs

There isn't one right answer here, because different trips call for different things. A short, casual hike with a group that's mostly staying together probably doesn't need much beyond a plan and maybe a couple of radios for the "we're behind you" chatter. A genuinely remote or higher-risk trip - multi-day, far from help, unpredictable weather - is where satellite emergency communication earns its cost, regardless of what else you're carrying.

LoRa mesh sits in an interesting space in between: it's for groups who want to message each other and see where everyone is while hiking somewhere without cell service, without needing a subscription or relying on outside infrastructure - understanding, going in, that terrain and deployment conditions strongly affect practical limits. Nelos is one way to use that kind of setup without having to learn the radio side of it yourself. It's not a replacement for a satellite device on trips that actually need one, and it's not magic against terrain - but for staying loosely in touch with the people you're hiking with, it's a reasonably simple piece of the puzzle.
