Does GPS Work Without Cell Service?
The short answer is yes - your phone can usually still work out where it is with no signal. The confusing part is why other people stop seeing you move, even though your phone knows exactly where it is.
The short answer
GPS gets its signal from satellites orbiting the Earth, not from your carrier's cell towers. So when your phone leaves cellular coverage, or when you switch on airplane mode, the GPS receiver can usually still fix its position - as long as it can "see" the sky.
The part people get wrong is the next step. "My phone knows where it is" and "my phone can send that location to someone else" are two separate things. The first is GPS, and it needs no network. The second needs a data path, and that data path is what disappears when you lose signal.
What GPS actually is
GPS is the United States' satellite positioning system. Most phones today also pick up signals from a few other systems at the same time - GLONASS (Russia), Galileo (Europe), BeiDou (China) - and the umbrella term for all of them is GNSS. For this article, "GPS" in the everyday sense is close enough.
The key point: the receiver in your phone only listens. It doesn't transmit anything to the satellites and doesn't "log in" anywhere. Each satellite continuously broadcasts the time and its own position. Your phone picks up signals from several satellites, works out how far away each one is from the tiny delay in its signal, and from that figures out where it is. It takes about three satellites for a position on the ground and one more for altitude.
Because this is a one-way process - listening, not talking - it uses no mobile data, needs no SIM, and doesn't depend on whether there's a cell tower in the area.
Knowing your location vs sending it out
This is the core of it. When you open a map app and see the blue dot land where you're standing, that's GPS doing its job, and it still does it with no cellular signal at all.
But when someone at home opens a location-sharing app and sees you, they're not looking at a satellite signal - they're looking at coordinates your phone uploaded to the internet, which their phone then downloaded. Different no-signal situations, and GPS in each one
Airplane mode
Airplane mode turns off the cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios. It does not turn off the GPS receiver. If location services are still enabled in settings, your phone can still fix its position in airplane mode. What you can't do is load new map tiles or push your location online. In other words, airplane mode is not a way to use a location-sharing app out of coverage.
Mountains, forest, roads far from any town
In these places there's usually no tower in range, so mobile data and Wi-Fi go together. GPS doesn't depend on ground infrastructure, so the phone still knows where you are. This is the gap between "still able to locate yourself" and "still able to communicate" - two things that don't fail at the same moment.
Indoors, tunnels, narrow canyons, dense forest canopy
This is where GPS itself struggles, because the receiver needs to "see" satellites in the sky. Concrete walls, a roof, steep rock walls on both sides, or a thick canopy can block or scatter the signal, making a fix slower, less accurate, or impossible. This is a different problem from losing cell service - here it's the satellite signal itself that's being blocked.
A few real-world limits of GPS
When you switch it on after a long time unused, or right after travelling a long way, the receiver can take a while to get its first fix, because it has to re-scan for which satellites are overhead. With a network connection this step is faster, because assistance data downloads the satellite list in advance; with no network it's slower, sometimes a few minutes. After the first fix, later ones are usually quick.
On accuracy: in good conditions - clear sky, open space - a modern phone usually fixes its position to within a few metres. In a city of tall buildings, in forest, or in a canyon, the error can be considerably larger, because the signal bounces off obstacles before reaching the phone. This is why the location dot sometimes "jumps" or drifts off the road you're actually on.
Maps are a separate problem
Even with GPS working perfectly, a coordinate is only useful if there's a base map to place it on. Your phone doesn't have a detailed map of a forest unless you downloaded it first. While you still have signal, download the area for your trip so you can view it with no internet. Nelos has worldwide offline maps for exactly this. A different channel for sending coordinates out
If your problem is that you want people in your group to see each other's location with no signal, you need a channel that isn't the internet. Radio is one option: each person carries a small radio device, the devices talk directly to each other, and the coordinates GPS produces travel over radio instead of over the mobile network.
