Does Life360 Work Without Signal?

Life360 is handy when there's a connection. The real question is what happens when your phone leaves coverage - and why the people in your Circle stop seeing you move, while your phone still knows exactly where it is.

The short answer

Life360 needs an internet connection to share and receive locations. When your phone has mobile data or Wi-Fi, the app updates almost continuously. When your phone leaves coverage and has no data path left, Life360 can't update your location with your Circle, so the people in your Circle only see your last known position.

Your phone can still work out where it is using its GNSS receiver. But "the phone knowing its own location" and "the phone getting that location to other people" are two separate things, and only the second one breaks when you lose signal.

What Life360 needs to update a location

Life360 works the way most location-sharing apps do. Each member's phone works out its own coordinates, then shares those coordinates with the other people in the same Circle over the internet. When you open the app and see where everyone is, you're looking at the most recent update each phone managed to send.

For a single update to go through, two things have to line up: the phone knows its own location, and there's a working path to the internet - mobile data or Wi-Fi. Take away the connection and the chain stops. The phone still calculates coordinates, but there's no way for those coordinates to leave the device.

What happens when your phone loses both mobile data and Wi-Fi

In a city, your phone almost always has at least one path to the internet, so you rarely run into this. On mountain roads, in forests, in many national parks, or on long highway stretches between populated areas, both connections can disappear at the same time.

When that happens, your phone can't send a new location, and it also doesn't receive new locations from anyone else, because their phones are usually in the same situation. On the screens of people still in coverage, your location will be wherever it last updated before the connection dropped. Many apps of this kind show a timestamp for that last update alongside it, but that line is easy to miss, and that's usually when people start worrying more than they need to.

Signal bars aren't the same as a usable data connection

People see signal bars and assume data still goes through. Bars only tell you the phone is picking up a signal from a tower. They say nothing about speed, stability, or whether that tower will let you push enough data through to finish a sync. You can have one or two bars and still not load a map or upload a location. At the edge of coverage this is common. For location sharing, "has bars" and "can move data" are worth treating as two different things.

Your phone knows where you are, but that isn't the same as sending it

This is the core point, and where a lot of people get it wrong.

GNSS - which includes GPS and similar satellite positioning systems - doesn't depend on an internet connection to work. The phone receives satellite signals and works out its position on its own, without using data. That signal can still be weak or lost in tunnels, indoors, narrow canyons, or dense forest, but it doesn't need cell service. A smartphone can use network data to help get a position faster or more accurately in the first few seconds, but that's assistance, not a requirement. In other words, even with no signal at all, the map app on your phone will usually still point to roughly where you're standing.

But for someone else to see that location, the coordinates have to travel from your phone to theirs, and that trip needs a channel. For Life360, that channel is the internet. With no internet, the coordinates stay on the phone, like a letter that's been written but has no one to carry it.

To sum up: "the phone knows its own location" is GNSS, and it doesn't depend on the internet. "The phone can pass that location to other people" is the connection, and the connection is what disappears when you leave coverage. Every location-sharing app that works over the internet hits this limit, not just Life360.

When your phone gets back online

Things usually recover on their own. When the phone picks up mobile data or Wi-Fi again, Life360 updates your current location with your Circle. From the perspective of someone back home, your position jumps from the old point to the new one. If you covered a long distance while out of signal, that jump can be large and won't follow the actual route.

One case is worth noting. If the phone runs out of battery or is turned off while out of coverage, there are no updates until it's back on and online. The last position other people saw is the last update before the phone lost its connection, and it may be hours old.

If you regularly go into areas with no signal

If a dead zone is an occasional thing, knowing the behavior above is enough. If your group regularly goes into places like that, there are a few additional directions. Each one handles a different part of the problem.

A local SIM or eSIM

Swapping a SIM or adding an eSIM only helps when the problem is that your carrier has poor coverage in that area but another carrier has some. If the area has no tower at all, no SIM changes that. A satellite communication device

Handheld satellite devices connect directly to a satellite network instead of a ground tower, so they work in many places with no cell service at all. They're especially useful when you need to communicate outside the group, or want an emergency channel that's independent of ground infrastructure. In return, they usually cost more, for the device and the service, and need a relatively clear view of the sky.

A separate communication layer for the group

There's a gap that neither a SIM nor a satellite device is aimed at: members of a group traveling together, close to each other, who just want to message and see each other's location. In that case, the group doesn't need to reach a distant server; they just need the phones in the group to reach each other. Where Nelos fits in

Nelos is a group communication app that uses LoRa radio. Your phone connects over Bluetooth (BLE) to a LoRa radio device running MeshCore. Instead of sending data over the internet, Nelos exchanges the group's data - messages and locations - over that radio layer. No cell service, no Wi-Fi, no account or backend server in between.

For location sharing, this fills exactly the gap above. Each phone's GNSS receiver still works out its coordinates as usual. As long as the radios in the group can still reach each other, Nelos carries those coordinates over LoRa instead of the internet, and shows each person's most recent shared position on a preloaded offline map.

A few things to be clear about. This isn't continuous real-time tracking the way it is with a connection. Range depends on terrain, hardware, antennas, and radio conditions, so there's no single number that holds for every trip. Nelos also isn't a rescue device and doesn't replace a satellite device when a trip genuinely needs the ability to call for help. It's a communication layer between members of a group, for the stretches when the group is out of coverage.

Combine, don't replace

There's no reason to drop Life360. When there's a connection, it does its job well: it lets people back home see where the group is and sends a notification when someone arrives. A sensible setup for a lot of groups is to let the internet apps handle the connected part, and have a separate layer for the stretches with no connection.

On a trip, that looks like this. In cities and on the highway, Life360 runs as normal. When the group turns onto a mountain road and the signal disappears, they switch to seeing each other's location through Nelos, as long as the radios in the group can still reach each other. When they get back into coverage, the internet apps sync again and everything is back to normal. The two layers don't conflict; each covers what the other can't reach.

Frequently asked questions

Does Life360 work without signal?

Not for location sharing. Life360 needs mobile data or Wi-Fi to update your location with your Circle and receive other people's locations. With both gone, members of the Circle only see your last known position.

My phone still has GPS, so why can't others see my location?

Because working out a location and sending a location are two different things. GNSS lets the phone know where it is without the internet. But for those coordinates to reach someone else's phone through Life360, you still need a data connection.

Can I use Life360 in Airplane Mode?

In Airplane Mode, the GNSS receiver can still work out a position if location is turned on. But Life360 can only share that position when Wi-Fi or mobile data is active. Airplane Mode isn't a way to use Life360 out of coverage.

Does GPS need the internet?

Not to receive satellite signals and calculate a position. A smartphone can use network data to get a position faster or more accurately at first, but that's only assistance.

Would switching to an eSIM make Life360 work in the mountains?

Only if the area actually has coverage from a carrier your current SIM can't reach. If the whole area has no tower, switching a SIM or eSIM changes nothing.
