Life360 Without Internet: A 1,700 km Motorcycle Trip With Nelos in Vietnam

Life360 can't send or receive new location updates once a phone loses both mobile data and Wi-Fi Internet access. On a 9-day trip in Vietnam, our group of 5 people on 5 motorcycles ran Life360 and Nelos side by side over about 1,700 km of road, trying out LoRa as an extra way to stay in touch.

When does Life360 not update location?

Life360 needs mobile data or Wi-Fi to send and receive new location updates. No Wi-Fi but still mobile data - it still works. No mobile signal but Wi-Fi connected to the Internet - it also still works. Only when both are gone does Life360 run out of ways to exchange a new location with your Circle - even though the phone's GPS receiver still knows exactly where it is. Figuring out where you are and getting that location to someone else are two different things, and only the second one depends on the Internet. What follows is what actually happened when we brought both Life360 and Nelos along on a long motorcycle trip.

9 days, 1,700 km by motorcycle

The group of 5 set out from Hanoi. Instead of riding the whole way, we shipped the bikes down to Quang Binh by overnight train first, then started riding from there. Life360 and Nelos also went on side by side from the Quang Binh leg onward.

Total distance for the whole trip was about 3,000 km; the motorcycle portion alone was about 1,700 km, with the rest covered by train on either end.

Gear we carried

Each bike carried a Wio Tracker L1 Pro node running MeshCore firmware, with GPS on the node left on for the entire trip. On the phone side, Nelos ran with location sharing on and stayed active in the background. The app was generally stable, and the Bluetooth link between phone and node didn't give us any real trouble.

Node battery lasted about 3 days with GPS always on - enough for a multi-day leg before needing a recharge. Phone battery was decent; our subjective impression was that drain was similar to running Google Maps in the background, but this trip didn't include any controlled measurement to back up a specific number.

One small incident worth noting: the L1 Pro, when carried in a backpack, sometimes got its raised joystick pressed by accident, which triggered MeshCore's hibernate mode. Our personal fix was to remove the joystick cap after the first pairing; later pairings on the trip didn't need it anymore.

One thing to be clear about

Everything described below depends on having compatible LoRa hardware and nodes staying within range of each other. This isn't a long-term performance benchmark, and Nelos isn't a rescue device.

Messaging, Need Help, and distance between riders

Within range, direct messages (DMs), group messages, and the Need Help button all worked well. Riders in the group usually stayed about 500 m apart. There were times the group spread out further, to around 2 km, and LoRa contact between nodes dropped at that distance. That number is just what we observed during that specific split - not a fixed maximum range, and not representative of the group's spread at every moment.

Group list and each person's node

All 5 members shared one team in Nelos, each with their own node. The team list shows phone status and node location information separately. When checking a member's location, it's worth paying attention to the most recent update time.

What's not smooth yet

Not everything was perfect. One friend in the group reported that location updates felt a bit slow. On iOS, location updates were sometimes uneven while the app ran in the background - we haven't fully verified the cause, and we're not claiming it's specifically due to deep background throttling or any other particular reason.

Life360 and Nelos on the same trip

We didn't measure exactly how many times Life360 lost connectivity on this trip. But the mechanics are exactly what the start of this article describes: Life360 can't send a new location to your Circle when the phone has no Internet, even though the phone still knows exactly where it is. Mountain roads in central Vietnam and the Central Highlands generally aren't places with consistent mobile signal everywhere; on stretches like that, Nelos served as a private communication layer for our group of 5 riding together, as long as the nodes stayed within LoRa range of each other. The two apps don't compete with each other; they cover two different layers of the same trip.

What we take away from 1,700 km

This was a real trip, not a test designed in advance, so the result isn't a tidy performance number either. On the riding legs, messaging over Nelos worked well whenever the nodes could still reach each other. Location sharing was useful for the group, but update speed and background behavior on iOS still need work. Node battery held up fine for a multi-day leg, and there were a few other rough edges - the joystick accidentally triggering hibernate is one example - worth noting for next time. As for Life360, the answer stays the same: Life360 can't send a new location to your Circle when the phone has no Internet.
