What Is a LoRa Mesh Radio?

If you've just come across the phrase "LoRa mesh radio" and aren't sure what it is, this explains it from scratch - no knowledge of radio needed, and no deep technical detail.

In short: a LoRa mesh radio is a small, battery-powered device that lets a group message and share location with each other when there's no cellular signal or Wi-Fi. It does that by talking directly to other devices of the same kind in the group, with no external infrastructure at all.

The basic picture

The easiest way to picture it is a chain:

Phone → Bluetooth → LoRa radio device → radio waves → another LoRa radio device → Bluetooth → another phone

The phone is the screen and keyboard - where you type messages and view the map. The radio device is what actually sends and receives, over radio waves instead of through a tower. The two are joined by Bluetooth, like wireless earbuds connecting to a phone.

What "LoRa" means

LoRa is short for "long range". It's a radio transmission technique designed to travel far at low power by sending data very slowly. That trade-off suits short messages and location coordinates - exactly the kind of data a group needs to exchange with no signal - but not photos, calls or web browsing.

LoRa uses different radio bands in different parts of the world (for example around 868 MHz in Europe, 915 MHz in North America, and around 920-923 MHz in many Asian countries). So when you buy a device, you need to choose the right version for your region.

What "mesh" means

If two devices are close enough, they talk directly. If they're too far apart, a message can go through a third device in between and continue to its destination. Many devices relaying for each other like this form a "mesh" - an interwoven network. That's how a spread-out group doesn't need everyone within range of each other - just a continuous chain of devices linking the two ends.

The kinds of device you'll come across

In a network, each device is called a node. Nodes can play different roles:

  • Handheld. The kind each person carries, connected to a phone. This is the usual starting point for a family or group.

Many handhelds have GPS inside, so the same device can double as a tracker when needed - you don't necessarily have to buy a separate one for each role.

Why it works offline

The key point: a LoRa mesh network uses no internet, no tower and no server for the devices in the group to reach each other. Messages and location only travel over radio between the nodes. That's why it works somewhere with no infrastructure at all - and also why it doesn't reach outside the group: you can't dial an emergency number or message someone in the city through it.

Maps are a separate matter. Because the network has no internet, the map has to be downloaded before you leave coverage. Some apps have this built in; Nelos has worldwide offline maps.

The software: the network protocol and the app

A modern LoRa mesh system has two software layers. The lower layer is the network protocol - the part that decides how a message travels from one node to the next. Two common open-source protocols are Meshtastic (older, large community) and MeshCore (newer). What it isn't

A LoRa mesh radio is not a satellite phone, not a rescue device, and not a way to beat terrain. Range depends on terrain, obstacles and antenna placement, and there's no number that's right for every case.
