LoRa Mesh vs Cellular Networks
Both carry messages and location over radio, but everything else about them - who runs it, what infrastructure it needs, how far and how much data it carries - is different. This explains that difference and when to rely on which.
We're used to messages and calls being nearly instant and nearly always available. That expectation comes from cellular networks, a system that's enormous and very expensive to build. LoRa mesh is a different thing entirely in scale and purpose, and comparing the two makes it clear what each is good for.
Infrastructure: run by a carrier, or run by the group
A cellular network is a grid of towers built and maintained by a carrier, linked together through a transport network and ultimately out to the internet. When you send a message, the data goes from your phone to the nearest tower, through the carrier's infrastructure, and on to the recipient's phone. You don't own any part of that chain; you rent the right to use it through a plan.
A LoRa mesh network is the opposite. No towers, no carrier. Each person in the group carries a small radio device, and the devices talk directly to each other. If two devices are too far apart to hear each other directly, a message can hop through a third device in between - that's what "mesh" means. The whole network belongs to the group, and it exists wherever the group takes it.
Range: a completely different model
With cellular, "signal or no signal" comes down to whether there's a tower close enough. In a city there almost always is; in mountains or forest there often isn't, and no SIM or plan changes that if the area has no transmitter.
With LoRa mesh, range is the distance between the devices in the group. LoRa is designed to travel a long way at low power, but "a long way" here depends heavily on terrain, obstacles, antenna placement and elevation. In dense terrain it might be a few hundred metres per hop; with line of sight and a raised antenna, much further. There's no number that's right for every case. A repeater placed high can link points that otherwise couldn't reach each other directly.
Bandwidth and latency: messages and location, not everything
A 4G/5G cellular network has the bandwidth for video, calls, web, loading online maps - almost anything. Latency is low, usually not noticeable.
LoRa is very slow compared to cellular. It suits short messages and location coordinates - exactly the kind of data a group needs to exchange with no signal - not photos, voice or the web. A message can take from a few seconds to a few tens of seconds to arrive, depending on the number of hops and conditions. Location updates at intervals, not continuously in real time.
Control and dependency
Cellular depends on the carrier and, for most messaging apps, also on the internet and the service's servers. When a tower is overloaded at a crowded event, or the power is out over a wide area, that whole chain can stop.
A LoRa mesh network uses none of that for the devices in the group to reach each other. With Nelos there's no account and no intermediary server for messages or location - the group's data only travels over the group's own network of devices. That's both a strength (no central point of failure) and a limit (nothing reaches outside the group).
Battery
A phone constantly scanning for cellular signal and holding a data connection is one of the biggest battery drains, especially at the edge of coverage when it has to transmit harder to reach a distant tower. A handheld LoRa device usually runs for days, because the protocol is low-power by nature. Exact figures vary by device - see the devices guide.
When cellular is clearly better
When there's signal, cellular wins on nearly every front: faster, more bandwidth, global reach, no extra hardware to buy, no need for anyone in your group to be within range of you. For everyday communication in a city, there's no reason to think about LoRa.
When LoRa mesh is useful
LoRa mesh earns its place precisely where cellular doesn't reach: when a group travelling together goes beyond reliable coverage and just needs to message each other and see each other's location. It doesn't try to replace cellular; it's an extra communication layer the group carries, running alongside. The sensible model for many groups is: use cellular and the internet where you have it, and have a LoRa layer for the stretch beyond reliable coverage.
