goTenna Mesh Alternatives for Emergencies and Disasters
"Emergency communication" covers two very different things: coordinating within a group right where you are, and reaching rescue services outside. Choosing the wrong type of device for each is a dangerous mistake.
When cell infrastructure goes down - a storm, an earthquake, a widespread power outage, or simply being outside coverage - many people look into what goTenna used to do and what to replace it with. This guide has to be careful, because the answer depends entirely on which kind of communication you need.
Two different things
Coordinating within a group or community on the ground. A family checking who's safe, neighbors or a volunteer team coordinating work, an outdoor group staying in touch when they split up. This doesn't need to reach any agency outside.
Calling for outside rescue. Dialing an emergency number, sending an SOS to search and rescue, notifying relatives in another area. This needs a path out of the area that has lost infrastructure.
goTenna Mesh and LoRa mesh systems do the first. They do not do the second.
What LoRa mesh helps with when infrastructure is down
When the tower is overloaded or the power is out, an internal LoRa network keeps a group messaging and sharing location without depending on that infrastructure - because it never used the tower in the first place. The limits to be clear about: range depends on terrain, obstacles, antennas and conditions; the devices in the group need to be within range of each other; and while a repeater or a community network can extend coverage, those also need to be installed and maintained beforehand. When a satellite device or PLB is the better choice
If what you need is to reach rescue services in a life-threatening situation, that's the job of one of the following two device types, not LoRa mesh:
A PLB (personal locator beacon). Manually activated, it transmits a digital signal on 406 MHz to the international COSPAS-SARSAT search and rescue satellite system, passing GPS coordinates to rescue services within minutes. No subscription needed. It's one-way only - this is an SOS button, not messaging. Works worldwide, needs a relatively clear view of the sky.
A satellite messenger (for example Garmin inReach, Zoleo). Two-way messaging, trip tracking, and an SOS button that goes to an emergency response coordination center. The trade-off is a monthly subscription.
What LoRa mesh and Nelos do not do
To be blunt so there's no misunderstanding. A LoRa mesh system, Nelos included:
- does not replace a PLB;
- does not replace a satellite SOS device;
- does not guarantee communication with emergency services;
- is not a device certified for life safety;
- should not be the only thing you rely on in an emergency.
Thinking in layers
No single device covers everything. The sensible way to prepare is to stack layers:
- Layer 1 - the plan. Meeting points, who contacts whom, where to gather, what to do if you get separated. This layer works even if every device fails.
- Layer 2 - internal communication. LoRa mesh (Nelos), two-way radios, or both - to coordinate within the group when cell infrastructure is down.
- Layer 3 - the path out. A PLB or satellite device - for a real SOS that reaches rescue services.
A household in an area that often loses power might only need layers 1 and 2. A group heading somewhere genuinely remote should have all three.
Where Nelos fits in this picture
Nelos is layer 2: it helps members of a group coordinate on the ground when infrastructure is down, over LoRa mesh - messaging, location on an offline map, and a "Need Help" button that alerts other members of the group along with your location. That button does not go to rescue services. Nelos is free, needs no account, uses no intermediary server - and is not a rescue device.
In short
Keep the two things clearly separate: coordinating within the group, and calling for outside rescue. A LoRa mesh system like Nelos is useful for the first when cell infrastructure is down. For the second, a PLB or satellite communication device is what you need - and that's a separate decision, not replaceable by any internal network. Can LoRa mesh call 112 or 911?
No. LoRa mesh is direct communication between devices in a group; it doesn't connect to the phone network or to emergency services. To reach rescue services when infrastructure is down, you need a satellite communication device or a PLB.
Does Nelos replace a PLB or a satellite SOS device?
No. Nelos is an internal communication layer between members of a group over LoRa. It is not a device certified for life safety and it does not guarantee communication with emergency services. For a life-threatening situation, a PLB or satellite device is what you need.
Where does the Need Help button in Nelos send?
