Camping Without Cell Service: Staying in Touch With the Group
For a camping group, the pattern is different from hiking: the tents and vehicles stay in one place while people spread out and come back. A fixed point is something you can take advantage of when you plan how to stay in touch.

Camping poses a different problem from hiking
With a hiking group, everyone moves together along a route, and the problem is keeping in touch down the line. With camping, there's usually a fixed anchor point - a vehicle, a central tent, a rock nearby - and people go for water, go to the toilet, split off for a day hike and come back. A few things mean camping needs its own approach:
- There's a spot where you can place a device in a good position and leave it for the whole trip.
- People spread out in many directions and at many distances, not in a line.
- Campsites are often in valleys, by lakes, or in forest - exactly the kind of signal-blocking terrain.
- You stay for several days, so battery and how you charge matter more.
- A larger group may split into smaller parties doing different things during the day.
Use the fixed point: one device placed as an anchor
The most flexible approach for camping with a LoRa radio system: everyone carries a device connected to a phone, and you place an extra node high up near the campsite as an anchor. That node relays between people who can't "hear" each other directly because of trees or terrain. It can be a spare handheld on a car roof, or a dedicated repeater if the terrain blocks a lot.
A few placement rules: as high and as clear as possible - a car roof, a strong branch, a rock outcrop; avoid the ground between tents; if the campsite is in a deep valley, a node on the valley rim can push signal down across the whole area. The page Extending coverage with a repeater says more.
When the group splits into smaller parties
With a larger group, a typical day might be some people staying at camp, one party going for water, one scouting the route for the next day. This is where messaging and location beat voice: each party can report "here's where we are, when we'll be back" without anyone holding a radio waiting to listen. If a party goes out of range of the central node, they temporarily lose contact - their last shared location still shows with a timestamp, and the connection usually recovers when they come back within range. Offline maps and landmarks
Before you leave coverage, download an offline map for the whole area - the trails, streams and roads around, not just the campsite. Mark the camp, the water points and the trailheads as shared landmarks. The location shown is the latest one each person shared, not continuous tracking.
Battery for a multi-day trip
Staying for days means no outlet to rely on. Charge every device the night before you leave. Bring a high-capacity power bank. Switch the phone to airplane mode once you're in the no-signal area - at that point the phone only needs Bluetooth to talk to the radio device, and it stops draining from scanning for a distant tower. A handheld LoRa radio usually runs for days, but checking the level each morning is still a good habit. Limits to remember
A LoRa mesh system keeps the group in touch with each other on the spot. It can't call for rescue and can't reach anyone outside the group. Range depends on terrain and there's no fixed number. For genuinely remote or higher-risk trips, you should still have a satellite messenger or PLB as a separate layer for the ability to call for rescue. Nelos is not a rescue device.
