The Sonnet Off-Grid Communicator Concept, Done Today

This isn't another list of Sonnet alternatives. It starts from what drew people to Sonnet in the first place - a use case - and explains how to build that use case with today's technology.

What Sonnet promised can be summed up briefly: you keep a familiar phone interface, add an external radio, and a group can communicate with each other where there's no cellular infrastructure - with no subscription for the radio link. That's a good model. The only question is what to build it with.

Why the model makes sense

A phone is very good at being the interface: keyboard, message history, maps, and - through its own GNSS receiver - your location. What a phone can't do is send that data anywhere with no mobile network. A small radio handles exactly that part. Splitting the roles like this means you don't learn a new specialised device - you use an app much like the messaging apps you already use.

How to achieve it today

The current direction closest to Sonnet's model is a smartphone plus a LoRa mesh radio. Each person carries a small radio paired to a phone over Bluetooth; the radios talk directly to each other and relay through each other, forming a local network that only needs the group itself to be within range. No towers, no satellite, no subscription for the radio link.

The big difference from Sonnet is that an open ecosystem sits behind it, not a single company. LoRa is the radio technology; an open-source mesh protocol such as MeshCore runs on the radio; and a phone app is the part you see. Many makers build the hardware. Same as, and different from, Sonnet's pitch

Same: no subscription for the radio link; group messaging; everyone's location on an offline map; a button that alerts the group; mesh relaying; and the option to add a repeater to cover a wider area (see Do You Need a LoRa Mesh Repeater?).

Different: Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi; a native app rather than a browser; text and location rather than voice and images; and - the most practical difference - the hardware is actually on sale.

Limits to be clear about

A LoRa mesh system keeps a group in touch with each other on the spot. It can't call emergency services and can't reach anyone outside the group. Range depends on terrain, with no fixed number (see Are Mesh Networks Reliable?).
